Syntaxin-5 also known as STX5 is a target protein with a molecular mass of around 35 kDa. It plays a central role in vesicle trafficking processes. Syntaxin-5 is part of the SNARE complex where it functions to mediate membrane fusion of vesicles essential for intracellular transport. The protein is expressed ubiquitously but has higher expression in brain and kidney tissues reflecting its diverse cellular functions.
Biological function summary
Syntaxin-5 is a critical component of the molecular machinery controlling vesicular transport. As a member of the Golgi apparatus Syntaxin-5 interacts within the SNARE complex to facilitate the precise delivery of cargo between endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi or Golgi to plasma membrane. Its role as a hub in intracellular transport highlights its importance in maintaining cellular homeostasis and ensuring the distribution of proteins and lipids.
Pathways
Syntaxin-5 sits prominently within intracellular trafficking routes particularly involved in the ER-Golgi transport and Golgi-to-plasma membrane pathways. It functions alongside proteins such as Bet1 and Membrin in vesicular transport processes. Together these proteins contribute to the maintenance of Golgi structure and the regulation of vesicle budding ensuring proper cellular logistics.
Syntaxin-5 has links to neurodegenerative conditions and metabolic syndromes. Notably disruptions in its function can relate to Alzheimer's disease where it affects amyloid precursor protein processing. Syntaxin-5 also interacts with proteins like Vti1a which is implicated in lysosomal storage disorders highlighting its broader relevance to diseases involving vesicle transport dysfunction.
