Sulfatase 2 (SULF2) also known as SULF-2 or extracellular sulfatase acts as an enzyme that removes sulfate groups from the heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs). It is a 100-110 kDa protein located primarily on the cell surface. SULF2's expression occurs mainly in tissues such as the liver kidney and lungs although it can be found in various other tissues too. By modifying HSPGs SULF2 influences cell signaling events that are critical to cellular communication and function.
Biological function summary
SULF2 participates in the modulation of growth factor signaling and cell surface interactions. This enzyme does not exist in isolation; instead it functions as a part of complexes involved in the extracellular matrix (ECM). Through its catalytic action SULF2 modulates the availability and activity of signaling molecules such as fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) and Wnt proteins.
