The GRIK3 gene encodes the protein GluK3 also known as kainate receptor subunit 3. This protein is involved in mediating synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. GluK3 is part of the ionotropic glutamate receptor family which forms ligand-gated ion channels. The protein has a molecular mass of approximately 107 kDa. GRIK3 is expressed in several regions of the brain including the cortex hippocampus and cerebellum indicating its important roles in these areas.
Biological function summary
The ionotropic receptor family includes GluK3 which forms a functional protein complex known for mediating excitatory neurotransmission. The activity of GluK3 involves the binding of glutamate leading to the opening of cation channels and allowing the flow of sodium and potassium ions.
