DSCR1L1 also known as RCAN2 (Regulator of Calcineurin 2) is a protein with a molecular weight of approximately 25 kDa. It is encoded by the DSCR1L1 gene and widely expressed in various tissues including the brain heart and skeletal muscles. DSCR1L1 plays a role in inhibiting the phosphatase activity of calcineurin by directly interacting with it. This interaction modulates the intracellular signaling processes that are essential for diverse cellular functions.
Biological function summary
This protein plays an important role in regulating calcium-dependent signaling pathways. Although DSCR1L1 is not typically part of a multiprotein complex it influences pathways through direct and indirect interactions. By inhibiting calcineurin DSCR1L1 limits the dephosphorylation of Nuclear Factor of Activated T-cells (NFAT) proteins which are key transcription factors. This regulation is critical for diverse biological processes including immune response and muscle development.
