ZIP2 known also as Zrt- and Irt-like protein 2 is an important transporter protein responsible for handling zinc across cellular membranes. The ZIP2 protein has an approximate molecular mass of 39 kDa. It is largely expressed in tissues where zinc plays an important role including the intestine and liver allowing these tissues to maintain zinc homeostasis. The transporter is part of the ZIP family which includes various zinc importers important for distributing zinc from extracellular or intracellular storage sites into the cytoplasm.
Biological function summary
ZIP2 functions to import zinc a critical cofactor in numerous enzymatic reactions and essential for maintaining cellular functions. ZIP2 does not operate in isolation but may interact with other metal ion transporters. These interactions help regulate zinc concentration within cells ensuring optimal physiological conditions. Zinc is necessary for DNA synthesis protein production and cellular growth and ZIP2 contributes to these essential processes by ensuring adequate zinc availability.
Pathways
Zinc transport involves complex networks one of which includes the metal ion homeostasis pathway. ZIP2 aids in modulating this pathway by facilitating zinc influx into cells from the extracellular environment. The protein is closely related to ZIP1 another member of the same family which also participates in zinc transportation. Together these transporters ensure sufficient zinc ion supply needed for various cellular pathways including those related to signal transduction and immune function.
Inadequacies or malfunctions in ZIP2 function potentially connect to zinc deficiency-related conditions such as growth retardation and immune dysfunction. Additionally improper zinc transport through ZIP2 can influence neurodegenerative disorders where zinc imbalance plays a role. Another protein ZIP3 often shows similar associations highlighting the complex interactions between zinc transporters in maintaining health and preventing disease.
