MICALL1 also known as MICAL-like 1 is a protein that plays a significant role in cellular trafficking and organization. MICALL1 facilitates the regulation of endocytic recycling. The protein contains several functional domains contributing to its activities within the cell and it has an approximate mass of 65 kDa. This protein expresses widely in human tissues including the brain and heart. MICALL1 exerts its functions mainly at the plasma membrane and in endosomal compartments where it influences the sorting and recycling of proteins.
Biological function summary
MICALL1 interacts with other proteins to modulate membrane dynamics. It forms part of a larger protein complex that includes small GTPases such as Rab proteins which are essential for vesicular fusion processes. MICALL1 binds to actin filaments and serves as a scaffold facilitating the reorganization of the cytoskeleton during membrane trafficking. This protein contributes to cellular processes including migration adhesion and synaptic vesicle recycling highlighting its importance in maintaining cellular homeostasis.
Pathways
MICALL1 functions in the coordination of the endocytic recycling pathway and may interact with proteins related to the Arp2/3 complex. It participates in pathways alongside EHD family proteins such as EHD1 that help maintain efficient trafficking between the plasma membrane and endosomes. MICALL1's actions ensure proper sorting and recycling of cargoes ensuring cellular responsiveness and adaptability to environmental cues.
MICALL1 has associations with certain neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Impaired functioning of MICALL1 disrupts cellular trafficking processes contributing to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease due to its impact on synaptic function. Altered MICALL1 expression correlates with some types of cancer possibly due to its involvement in cell migration and invasion. In these conditions interactions with other proteins like EHD1 might influence disease progression and cellular behavior.
