Gingipain R1 also known as RgpA is a cysteine protease enzyme with a molecular mass of approximately 95 kDa. It is expressed predominantly in the outer membrane of Porphyromonas gingivalis a bacterium important in periodontal disease. Gingipains including Gingipain R1 play an essential role in bacterial virulence and are known for their cleavage specificity towards Arg-X peptide bonds. They contribute significantly to the degradation of host proteins and are key factors in the processing of bacterial proteins facilitating the survival and pathogenicity of the bacterium.
