Background Abi1, Abi2, and Abi3 are members of the Abl1 interactor family (Abi), which function as adaptor signaling molecules downstream of the receptor tyrosine kinase Abl1 (1-3). In addition to binding to Abl1, all Abi proteins contain a Src homology 3 (SH3) domain and interact with the WAVE complex, an actin regulator involved in membrane ruffling and lamellipodia formation (4,5). As cytoskeletal adaptor proteins, Abi proteins are likely to regulate actin cytoskeletal remodeling. Interestingly, , the gene encoding Abi3, is genetically linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD).
