Background E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase TRIM7 (TRIM7, RNF90, GNIP) is a member of the tripartite motif-containing (TRIM) family of E3 ubiquitin ligases that mediate protein degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasome system (1,2). The gene has four human isoforms and plays roles in metastasis of cancers, enterovirus replication, and the innate immune response (1-5). TRIM7 inhibits DNA virus-triggered innate immune responses by promoting ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of STING1 (3,6). TRIM7 targets mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS) for degradation and negatively regulates antiviral responses against RNA viruses (4,6).
