Growth Factors and Cytokines for studying VEGF in the research area. Storage Human VEGF-121 Recombinant Protein is supplied as lyophilized material that is very stable at -20ºC. It is recommended to reconstitute with sterile water at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL which can be further diluted in aqueous solutions as needed. Addition of a carrier protein (0.1% HSA or BSA) is recommended for long-term storage. Once in storage, store at 4ºC and use within 1 month, or store at -20ºC to -80ºC and use within 3 months to prevent loss of potency. Aliquot to avoid multiple freeze/thaw cycles if storing reconstituted material at -20ºC to -80ºC. Source / Purification Recombinant human VEGF-121 was expressed in and is supplied in a lyophilized form. Background VEGF is the second most abundant splice variant of vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A; formerly VEGF) (1,2). VEGF is produced by endothelial cells, macrophages, T cells, and other cell types. VEGF is involved in angiogenesis, vascular endothelial cell survival, growth, migration, and vascular permeability (1). VEGF expression is induced by hypoxia, inflammatory cytokines, and through oncogene products in tumors (1-3). VEGF binds to VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 receptor tyrosine kinases (1). Binding of VEGF to VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 leads to activation of pathways involving PI3K/Akt, p38 MAPK, and FAK (1). VEGF plays a key role in tumor angiogenesis in many cancers (2).
