PPIL4 also known as Peptidylprolyl Isomerase Like 4 is a member of the cyclophilin family of proteins. It exhibits peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase activity facilitating the folding of proteins by catalyzing the cis-trans isomerization of proline imidic peptide bonds in oligopeptides. The protein has a molecular weight of around 56 kDa and is ubiquitously expressed in various tissues throughout the body.
Biological function summary
PPIL4 participates in protein folding and assembly and it plays a role in maintaining cellular functions. This protein is part of complexes involved in RNA processing and mRNA splicing within the cell. It may interact with other spliceosomal components indicating its involvement in the regulation of gene expression through alternative splicing.
Pathways
PPIL4 is involved in the regulation of mRNA splicing influencing the expression of genes at the post-transcriptional level. It is connected to the spliceosome pathway where it associates with proteins like SNRNP200 and other spliceosomal proteins to modulate pre-mRNA splicing. This connection aids in the precise control of gene expression necessary for various cellular processes.
Altered PPIL4 function has implications in certain cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Changes in PPIL4 expression may link to the disruption of normal splicing activities contributing to malignancies like adenocarcinomas. The protein's association with complex components like SNRNP200 could play a role in these diseases by affecting RNA processing stability and fidelity which are critical for maintaining normal cellular activities.
