ZMYM2/RAMP also referred to as zinc finger MYM-type protein 2 or Retinoic Acid Modulating Protein mechanically functions as a transcriptional regulator. It has a molecular mass of about 150 kDa and predominantly localizes in the nucleus. The protein is expressed in various tissues with notable presentations in the brain and testis. It forms part of intricate multiprotein complexes which facilitate its function in regulating gene transcription.
Biological function summary
ZMYM2/RAMP influences several cellular functions through its role as a co-regulator of transcription. It notably participates in corepressor complexes like the NuRD complex which modulates chromatin structure and gene expression. This protein's MYM-type zinc fingers bind specifically to DNA or protein partners allowing it to alter expression profiles of genes involved in diverse cellular processes including cell differentiation and development.
Pathways
ZMYM2/RAMP features within several important biological signaling routes including the retinoic acid signaling pathway. This pathway which ZMYM2/RAMP helps regulate is important for development and differentiation. Within this pathway ZMYM2/RAMP interacts with other proteins such as retinoic acid receptors to modulate transcriptional responses. Additionally it connects with the Wnt signaling pathway intersecting at points with well-recognized proteins like β-catenin playing further roles in cell fate determination.
ZMYM2/RAMP exhibits connections to specific cancers and developmental abnormalities. Aberrant expression or mutations in ZMYM2/RAMP have associations with acute promyelocytic leukemia particularly through its fusion with the RARα gene interfering with normal cellular differentiation. Furthermore it shows relevance to certain nervous system disorders through its interaction with proteins involved in neural development marking it as a potential target for understanding and tackling related pathologies.
