RHBG also known as Rh family B glycoprotein is an ammonia transporter. This protein moves ammonia across cell membranes without the use of energy facilitating its passage in and out of cells. RHBG weighs approximately 53 kDa and is integral to membrane structure. You can find RHBG highly expressed in the kidney and liver where it performs its ammonia transport function efficiently. It also shows expression in parts of the gastrointestinal tract contributing to nitrogen metabolism.
Biological function summary
RHBG functions as part of processes that regulate acid-base balance in the body maintaining homeostasis. Although not part of a larger complex RHBG works alongside other ammonia transporters such as its close relatives RHCG and RHAG to manage ammonium balance in tissues. This action is critical in waste excretion and nitrogen metabolism allowing proper cell function.
Pathways
Mechanisms involving RHBG play roles in the nitrogen metabolism and renal acid excretion pathways. In the kidney it operates closely with pathways that balance pH levels meaning it cooperates with proteins like RHCG to achieve effective regulation of ammonia levels within the renal system. These pathways support the safe removal of waste products from the body protecting against metabolic disorders caused by nitrogen imbalance.
RHBG associates with conditions like hyperammonemia and certain kidney diseases. When RHBG function is impaired ammonia can accumulate leading to elevated blood ammonia levels contributing to various pathologies. In the context of kidney diseases RHBG disruption interferes with the body's ability to maintain proper acid-base homeostasis linking it to proteins such as RHCG and others involved in bicarbonate transport that help regulate kidney function.
