The Complex I subunit 8 kDa also known as NDUFS8 or by its approximate mass of 8 kilodaltons (kDa) forms an integral part of the mitochondrial membrane. This protein is expressed in almost all human tissues reflecting its widespread cellular importance. As a subunit of NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (Complex I) it contributes to the electron transport chain in mitochondria where it plays a mechanical role in electron transfer.
Biological function summary
Complex I subunit 8 kDa is involved in energy production within cells. As a component of Complex I it participates in the process of oxidative phosphorylation. This protein associates with other subunits to drive the transfer of electrons from NADH to ubiquinone which generates a proton gradient used by ATP synthase to produce ATP the energy currency of the cell.
Pathways
Complex I subunit 8 kDa is part of the mitochondrial respiratory chain especially influencing oxidative phosphorylation and energy metabolism pathways. It connects with other proteins such as NADH dehydrogenase and ubiquinone through these pathways. This connection emphasizes its central place in energy generation maintaining cellular metabolism and influencing the greater metabolic network.
Complex I subunit 8 kDa plays a role in mitochondrial complex I deficiency and Leigh syndrome. These conditions exhibit its importance where dysfunction or mutation leads to issues in cellular energy processes. In the context of these disorders its relationship with other Complex I proteins highlights its interdependence with the mitochondrial machinery affecting energy production significantly when compromised.
