FSH-R also known as FSH receptor or follicle-stimulating hormone receptor has a molecular mass of approximately 78 kDa. It is mainly expressed in the gonadal tissues including ovarian granulosa cells in females and Sertoli cells in males. This receptor is part of the G-protein coupled receptor family and plays an important role in mediating the actions of the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) which is important for reproductive processes. Additionally other alternative names include follitropin receptor.
Biological function summary
FSH-R facilitates the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles in females and supports spermatogenesis in males. It does not function as part of a larger protein complex but interacts with various G-proteins to trigger downstream signaling. The activation of FSH-R promotes the production of sex steroids and gamete development directly influencing fertility and reproductive success. The receptor’s function is critical during the reproductive cycle regulating the development of the gametes.
Pathways
The interaction of FSH-R with G-proteins activates the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling pathway an important regulator of cellular hormone responses. This pathway impacts the expression of genes related to steroidogenesis and follicular development. FSH-R signaling also shows linkage to the MAPK pathway which further influences cellular proliferation and differentiation. In these pathways FSH-R works closely with proteins like aromatase and LH receptor highlighting its regulation of endocrine functions.
FSH-R plays a significant role in infertility and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Mutations or malfunctions within the FSH-R can lead to irregularities in FSH signaling affecting fertility by impairing gamete production or hormonal balance. Among these disrupted pathways cross-talk with the LH receptor and dysregulated cAMP signaling are common highlighting FSH-R's involvement in these reproductive conditions. Proper functioning of the FSH-R is essential to maintain normal reproductive health and prevent these disorders.
