PRAX-1 also called Proline-Rich Anxious (PRAX) Protein 1 is a protein involved in neuronal signaling processes. Its molecular mass is approximately 28 kDa. The protein shows strong expression in the central nervous system notably within neurons. PRAX-1 has regions rich in proline which facilitates interactions with other proteins. These interactions hint that the protein could have multifunctional roles in cellular environments where it is expressed.
Biological function summary
PRAX-1 aids in the regulation of neuronal signal transduction mechanisms. It does not usually function as part of a large protein complex. It acts independently to influence synaptic functions and neural plasticity suggesting its role in adapting neuron signaling to various stimuli. This function is essential in maintaining healthy neuron communication and may impact learning and memory processes within the brain.
Pathways
PRAX-1 operates within the MAP kinase signaling cascade a pathway important for transmitting extracellular signals to elicit cellular responses. The intricate interaction with other signaling proteins such as Ras and ERK signifies PRAX-1's involvement in modulating these pathways. These connections position PRAX-1 as a potential regulator at multiple levels of cell signaling networks impacting various cellular responses.
PRAX-1 has links to anxious behavior which can arise from abnormal neuronal signaling. Researchers connect dysfunction in this protein with anxiety-related conditions. Furthermore PRAX-1 interacts with GABAergic signaling involving GABA receptors which play a role in anxiety disorders. The protein’s altered function may therefore contribute significantly to the pathophysiology of these mental health disorders.
