The Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) antigen consists of several proteins important to the viral life cycle including core envelope and nonstructural proteins. The core protein often referred to as HCV core or C protein has a mass of about 21 kDa. It forms an important structural component of the virus and is expressed primarily in liver cells where the virus replicates. This antigen facilitates viral assembly aids in RNA packaging and plays a role in forming the virus particle.
Biological function summary
The Hepatitis C Virus antigen participates in the replication and infection processes of the virus. It also contributes to the host's immune evasion. The HCV antigen part of a complex involving host proteins disrupts cellular processes to enhance viral survival. The interaction between the core protein and cellular machinery can alter immune regulation and apoptosis creating an environment conducive to persistent infection.
Pathways
Hepatitis C Virus antigen forms part of the viral replication and protein translation pathways within the host cell. It interacts with the mTOR and MAPK signaling pathways. Within these pathways the core protein engages with cellular proteins such as ras and PI3K modulating cell growth and survival in favor of the virus.
Hepatitis C Virus antigen is integral to hepatitis C infection leading to liver diseases like cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The interaction of the antigen with toll-like receptors (TLR) and cytokines exacerbates inflammatory responses contributing to liver tissue damage. In hepatocellular carcinoma altered expression and interaction of proteins like TLR and core antigen promote oncogenic transformation.
