Calpain 2 also known as m-calpain and Calpain 1 known as u-calpain are calcium-dependent non-lysosomal cysteine proteases. They have an approximate mass of 80 kDa for the large catalytic subunit. These proteins exist ubiquitously across various tissues in mammals. Mechanically Calpain 2 and Calpain 1 modulate a multitude of cellular processes by cleaving specific substrates in a calcium-dependent manner. Both require different calcium concentrations for activation with Calpain 2 needing higher levels compared to Calpain 1.
