Nrf2 (Nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2) is a transcription factor that plays an important role in regulating the expression of antioxidant proteins. It binds to antioxidant response elements (ARE) to activate genes involved in oxidative stress response. Nrf2 has an approximate mass of 66 kDa and is expressed in various tissues including the liver kidney muscle and brain. Some alternate names for Nrf2 include NFE2L2. This protein gets released from its cytoplasmic inhibitor Keap1 when oxidative stress occurs.
