Tau also known as MAPT is a protein with significant roles in the nervous system. Its molecular weight ranges from 48 to 67 kDa varying due to alternative splicing. Tau is expressed mainly in neurons but also found in astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. Mechanically it stabilizes microtubules by binding to them which is essential for maintaining neural cell shape and facilitating intracellular transport. MAPK1 also known as ERK2 is a serine/threonine kinase involved in cellular functions such as proliferation and differentiation. It has a molecular weight of approximately 41 kDa and is expressed in almost all tissues.
