ADRA2B also known as alpha-2B adrenergic receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor with an approximate mass of 50 kDa. It is specifically involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter release playing a critical role in the sympathetic nervous system. The receptor is expressed in several tissues including the brain heart and lungs. It has a high affinity for catecholamines and by binding to these ligands ADRA2B modulates various physiological processes.
Biological function summary
The alpha-2B adrenergic receptor is involved in mediating vasoconstriction and neurotransmission. This receptor is part of a larger complex of adrenergic receptors which includes alpha-2A and alpha-2C subtypes. Through its activity ADRA2B influences cardiovascular functions by controlling blood vessel tone and cardiac output. The receptor also plays roles in the central nervous system by affecting neurotransmitter release which impacts stress and arousal responses.
Pathways
The alpha-2B adrenergic receptor participates in the adrenergic signaling pathway influencing cardiovascular and nervous system activities. In this pathway it is associated with G protein interactions leading to inhibition of adenylate cyclase and reduction of cAMP levels. ADRA2B also interacts with proteins such as Giα subunits which further disseminate signals involved in the regulation of physiological responses like heart rate and vascular resistance.
The alpha-2B adrenergic receptor has links with cardiovascular diseases and psychiatric disorders. Dysregulation or mutations in ADRA2B may contribute to conditions like hypertension by affecting vasoconstriction and cardiovascular stability. Additionally alterations in receptor function could relate to mood disorders such as depression due to its role in neurotransmitter regulation. ADRA2B interacts with other adrenergic receptors and neurotransmitter systems influencing the pathophysiology of these diseases.
