SNAI3 also known as Snail family transcriptional repressor 3 is a zinc-finger protein involved in transcription regulation. It has a molecular mass of approximately 30-34 kDa. SNAI3 is expressed in various tissues but shows significant expression in mesodermal and neuroectodermal cells. The protein functions by binding to E-box motifs in the promoter regions of target genes and repressing their transcription.
Biological function summary
SNAI3 plays a role in cellular processes including epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) which is critical for development and wound healing. SNAI3 does not form part of a large protein complex but interacts with other molecules to exert its regulatory function. Its activity helps facilitate changes in cell adhesion and motility impacting developmental pathways and cellular reprogramming.
Pathways
SNAI3 plays roles in EMT and the Wnt signaling pathway. The Wnt pathway is important in cell proliferation and determination and SNAI3 is known to interact with key proteins such as β-catenin to modulate these processes. SNAI3 regulates genes involved in these pathways integrating signals that drive changes in cell state and phenotype during morphogenesis.
SNAI3's function connects to cancer and fibrosis. In cancer deregulated SNAI3 expression can promote metastasis by facilitating EMT reminiscent of its role in normal tissue maintenance. Proteins like Twist1 and ZEB1 interact with SNAI3 in these contexts possibly contributing to aggressive cancer phenotypes. In fibrosis altered SNAI3 expression affects tissue remodeling partially due to its influence on extracellular matrix composition.
