SLC14A2 also known as urea transporter B (UT-B) functions as a urea transporter protein. Its mass is approximately 102 kDa. SLC14A2 is expressed in several tissues with high levels found in the kidneys bladder and red blood cells. The protein facilitates the reabsorption of urea in the renal medulla playing an essential role in the urinary concentrating mechanism.
Biological function summary
SLC14A2 contributes to the regulation of urea transport across cell membranes to maintain nitrogen balance. It does not function as part of a larger protein complex but works in conjunction with other transporters to modulate urea concentrations. This process is vital in organisms that require efficient excretion of nitrogen products such as mammals.
Pathways
SLC14A2 functions within the renal medullar urea recycling and excretion pathway. It acts together with aquaporins particularly AQP1 and AQP3 to regulate water reabsorption and enhance urinary concentration. Additionally SLC14A2 plays a part in the urea cycle linking it to nitrogen metabolism pathways that involve enzymes such as carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1.
Mutations or dysfunctions in SLC14A2 can lead to nephrogenic diabetes insipidus due to impaired water reabsorption. This condition relates to defects in the urinary concentrating ability of the kidneys often connected to altered aquaporin function. Changes in SLC14A2 activity have also been associated with disorders of electrolyte imbalance impacting proteins involved in transport regulation like SLC26A4.
