The B27 protein also known as HLA-B27 is a specific allele of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I molecules. This protein has a mass of approximately 45 kDa and is mainly expressed on the surface of nucleated cells especially in immune cells like lymphocytes. HLA-B27 plays an important role in presenting peptides to the immune system enabling the recognition and clearance of pathogens. This expression helps maintain immune surveillance and promotes the initiation of immune responses.
Biological function summary
This protein assists in the regulation of immune system activities. HLA-B27 does so by forming a complex with beta-2 microglobulin and presenting endogenous antigens to CD8+ T cells. This presentation is important for immune regulation and cellular immunity.
