RRP9 also known as Ribosomal RNA Processing 9 is a protein that plays a mechanical role in ribosome biogenesis. It has a molecular mass of approximately 74 kDa. The protein is mainly expressed in the nucleolus the site where ribosomal RNA synthesis and initial steps of ribosome assembly occur. RRP9 contains several conserved motifs that enable it to bind RNA and participate in various processing events essential for this function.
Biological function summary
The protein functions as a component of the small subunit (SSU) processome a large ribonucleoprotein complex. RRP9 contributes to the early pre-rRNA processing steps that produce the small subunit of the ribosome. The SSU processome carries out essential modifications and cleavages necessary for the maturation and functionality of ribosomes. Therefore RRP9 is critical to ensure accurate production of ribosomal subunits.
Pathways
RRP9 is involved in ribosome biogenesis and RNA processing pathways. Through its role in the SSU processome it connects with other proteins such as UTP-C and MPP10 which coordinate these pathways. Ribosome biogenesis is fundamental for protein synthesis and cell proliferation establishing RRP9's importance in these cellular processes. Proper coordination of these pathways is necessary for maintaining cellular homeostasis and function.
RRP9 relates to ribosomopathies conditions caused by defects in ribosomal function. Mutations or dysregulation of RRP9 can result in impaired ribosome assembly contributing to disorders like Diamond-Blackfan anemia. In this disorder RRP9's interaction with other ribosomal proteins like RPS19 becomes disrupted leading to defective erythropoiesis. Additionally abnormal RRP9 expression can be linked to cancer development where increased ribosome production is a common feature.
