SUHW1 also known as suppressor of hairy wing is a transcription factor with a molecular mass of approximately 95 kDa. It plays a significant role in regulating gene expression by binding to specific DNA sequences. SUHW1 is expressed in various tissues including embryonic and adult cells where it functions as a DNA-binding protein influencing the transcriptional activity of numerous target genes.
Biological function summary
SUHW1 helps regulate gene silencing by forming part of a multiprotein complex. It interacts with other proteins to modulate chromatin structure ensuring that specific genes are either repressed or activated based on cellular requirements. This activity allows SUHW1 to control various processes such as development differentiation and cellular identity by adjusting the transcriptional landscape in response to internal and external signals.
Pathways
SUHW1 contributes to the transcriptional repression pathways through its interactions with other chromatin-modifying proteins. It plays an important role in the Polycomb group (PcG) pathway which helps maintain gene silencing during development. Additionally SUHW1 is linked to the Notch signaling pathway which is essential for cell fate determination. In this context SUHW1 may interact with proteins like Polycomb and other transcription factors to coordinate the regulation of target genes.
Aberrant SUHW1 expression has been observed in certain types of cancer such as leukemia where it may influence genes involved in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis. It also has potential connections to neurological disorders where dysregulation of gene expression leads to disease progression. In these cases SUHW1 might interact with other proteins like the Polycomb repressive complex to modulate pathways associated with disease development and progression.
