B3GALT2 also known as Beta-13-galactosyltransferase 2 is an enzyme with a molecular weight of approximately 43 kDa. This protein mostly functions within the Golgi apparatus where it facilitates carbohydrate biosynthesis. The enzyme adds galactose in a beta-13 linkage to N-acetylglucosamine residues on glycoproteins and glycolipids. Expression of B3GALT2 occurs widely across tissues with notable levels in the liver and kidney.
Biological function summary
B3GALT2 plays a role in the biosynthesis of glycoproteins and glycolipids. These processes are essential for cell-cell communication and molecular stability on the cell surface. The enzyme operates as a part of the larger family of glycosyltransferases. It does not typically form complexes functioning independently to carry out its catalytic activities within cells. The resulting glycan structures contribute significantly to maintaining cellular homeostasis and signaling mechanisms.
Pathways
The regulation of cell surface glycosylation requires the involvement of B3GALT2. It is actively engaged in pathways such as N-glycan biosynthesis and the formation of glycosphingolipids. B3GALT2 works in coordination with other glycosyltransferases like ST3GAL1 to ensure the correct assembly of glycan chains. These pathways directly influence processes like cell adhesion and immune response modulation.
Abnormalities in B3GALT2 expression relate to conditions such as congenital disorders of glycosylation and certain kidney diseases. Altered enzymatic activity can lead to improper glycosylation patterns affecting protein function and stability. In these disorders B3GALT2 might have interactions with proteins involved in endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation playing a role in the molecular pathology observed in affected cells.
