The MOSPD1 protein also known as Mesoderm/Posterior 1 or Motile Sperm Domain-Containing Protein 1 is a 458 amino acid protein with a mass of approximately 52 kDa. MOSPD1 localizes primarily to the Golgi apparatus and is expressed in a variety of tissues with particularly high expression in the heart skeletal muscle and testis. The protein features an MSP domain characteristic of the protein family involved in cell motility and signaling.
Biological function summary
MOSPD1 plays a role in cell signaling and interaction processes. The protein does not work as a part of a larger complex but associates with membrane structures including the Golgi membranes and other cellular membranes. This location suggests its involvement in vesicle trafficking or signaling pathways that regulate cellular dynamics. Furthermore MOSPD1 influences cytoskeletal organization affecting cell shape and movement.
Pathways
MOSPD1 is involved in the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton and Golgi-mediated trafficking. It interacts with proteins such as F-actin contributing to the dynamics of cell shape and motility. MOSPD1’s function relates to these pathways by ensuring proper cellular trafficking which is pivotal for maintaining cellular architecture and communication.
Research links MOSPD1 to cardiomyopathy and certain cancers. In cardiomyopathy MOSPD1's interaction with cytoskeletal proteins like F-actin affects myocardial cell structure and function. In cancer aberrant regulation of cell motility and signaling pathways involving MOSPD1 could lead to increased tumor invasiveness and metastasis although the exact mechanisms remain under investigation.
