Lymphotactin also known as ATAC (Activation-induced T cell-derived and chemokine related cytokine) is a chemokine that plays an important role in immune system communication. It has a molecular mass of around 12 kDa. Lymphotactin is unique because it is the only member of the C class chemokines lacking one of the conserved cysteines found in other chemokines. It is primarily expressed in activated T cells and NK cells and can be found in tissues such as the spleen thymus and lymph nodes.
Biological function summary
This chemokine specifically attracts T cells and NK cells to sites of inflammation. It is not known to form part of larger molecular complexes. Lymphotactin contributes to cell signaling events that direct immune cells to infection sites or areas of tissue damage ensuring specific and effective immune responses. This targeting is especially useful during the immune system's response to pathogens aiding in the clearance of infections.
Pathways
Lymphotactin influences immune response pathways especially those involved in cell-mediated responses. It interacts with the chemokine receptor XCR1 which plays a role in immune surveillance by guiding T cells to infected zones. Lymphotactin's activity bridges innate and adaptive immunity by directing cells where they are needed most linking it to pathways like cytokine signaling and inflammatory response.
Lymphotactin has a role in conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and certain autoimmune disorders. Overproduction or dysregulation can exacerbate these conditions by leading to excessive immune cell infiltration and inflammation. The chemokine connects to proteins like XCR1 in these disease contexts influencing cellular migration and the extent of an inflammatory response. Understanding its disease-related interactions helps in the development of targeted therapies.
