REEP6 also known as Receptor Expression Enhancing Protein 6 is a protein with a molecular mass of approximately 27 kDa. Its main mechanical role is to assist with the proper folding and expression of receptor proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). REEP6 is strongly expressed in retinal cells but it may also be present in lower levels in other tissues. By interacting with newly synthesized proteins REEP6 helps in their stabilization and transport to the cell surface.
Biological function summary
The REEP6 protein supports sensory neuron function by regulating receptor proteins critical for processing sensory inputs. It does this as part of protein complexes within ER membranes where it influences the trafficking of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) specifically involved in visual photoreception. In the context of the retina REEP6 actions enable photoreceptors to respond correctly to light which is important for vision.
Pathways
Research identifies REEP6 as integral to cellular mechanisms related to protein processing and trafficking pathways. It plays a role along with proteins such as GPrin1 and Sec24C in the phototransduction pathway which converts light stimuli into visual signals. These pathways control how proteins are sorted and delivered to their destinations affecting overall cell communication and homeostasis.
Mutations in REEP6 are linked to retinitis pigmentosa a degenerative eye condition leading to vision loss. This disorder affects photoreceptor function and is connected to rhodopsin protein deficiencies which are common in patients with this type of retinal disorder. Variants in REEP6 can also affect its function resulting in altered receptor expression that contributes to disease progression.
