Galectin 2 also known as LGALS2 is a member of the galectin family of beta-galactoside-binding proteins. It has a molecular mass of approximately 14 kDa. Galectin 2 is mainly expressed in the gastrointestinal tract and is found in tissues such as the small intestine colon and stomach. It functions mechanical as a carbohydrate-binding protein that interacts with cell surface glycoproteins and glycolipids influencing cell adhesion and signaling processes.
Biological function summary
Galectins like Galectin 2 play an important role in cell-cell interactions and cellular communication. Although not part of a larger complex Galectin 2 can bind to specific glycans modulating immune responses and inflammation. It can influence leukocyte migration and cytokine secretion contributing to the modulation of the immune system. Galectin 2 also impacts apoptosis and cell proliferation affecting tissue homeostasis and repair.
Pathways
Galectin 2 is involved in the regulation of immune response and inflammation pathways. It interacts with proteins such as integrins and glycoproteins affecting the signaling pathways that regulate immune cell activity. One example is the NF-kB signaling pathway where Galectin 2 can modulate the activation of this pathway influencing inflammation and immune responses. These interactions highlight its role in fine-tuning immune system functions during inflammation.
Galectin 2 has been implicated in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) due to its expression in the gastrointestinal tract and role in inflammation. It is also associated with cardiovascular diseases as it influences inflammation and immune cell activity which are key in the development of atherosclerosis. Proteins like TNF-alpha known for their role in inflammation and immune responses have connections to Galectin 2 through these disease processes. Understanding Galectin 2's influence on these conditions provides insights into potential therapeutic strategies targeting inflammation and immune responses.
