PEX11B or peroxisomal biogenesis factor 11 beta is a protein involved in the maintenance and proliferation of peroxisomes. The protein has a molecular mass of approximately 27 kDa. PEX11B is expressed throughout different tissues but has higher expression levels in tissues with high metabolic activity such as the liver brain and kidneys. This protein belongs to the PEX family which plays a role in peroxisome dynamics.
Biological function summary
PEX11B participates in the elongation and division of peroxisomes. It does not function independently but instead interacts with other peroxisomal biogenesis factors as part of a larger complex responsible for peroxisome morphogenesis. This action is important for maintaining proper peroxisome numbers and adapting cell compartmentalization according to metabolic demands. By affecting peroxisome dynamics PEX11B indirectly influences cellular processes like fatty acid beta-oxidation and reactive oxygen species detoxification.
Pathways
PEX11B's role is significant in the peroxisomal biogenesis pathway facilitating peroxisome multiplication. It connects with other proteins such as DRP1 which assists in membrane fission during division. The coordinated function of these proteins ensures proper peroxisomal turnover and function. Additionally PEX11B influences the cellular response to oxidative stress by regulating peroxisome numbers which in turn impacts cellular signaling pathways involved in stress response.
PEX11B mutations are linked to certain peroxisome biogenesis disorders like Zellweger spectrum disorders. These mutations can lead to impaired peroxisome function resulting in critical metabolic imbalances and developmental issues. PEX11B closely associates with other peroxin proteins such as PEX1 and PEX6 which share roles in peroxisomal assembly. Together they highlight the impact of peroxisome homeostasis on human health.
