ORMDL3 also known as ORM1-like protein 3 is a transmembrane protein located in the endoplasmic reticulum. The molecular mass of ORMDL3 is approximately 17 kDa. This protein is expressed ubiquitously meaning it is found in most tissues throughout the body. ORMDL3 plays an important role in regulating sphingolipid biosynthesis by inhibiting the serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT) complex which is the first step in the sphingolipid de novo pathway.
Biological function summary
ORMDL3 modulates lipid metabolism and immune response regulation. It does this by being part of a regulatory complex with the serine palmitoyltransferase therefore influencing the production of sphingolipids which are essential components of cell membranes and contribute to cell signaling.
