How the assay works
Human Lipoprotein A SimpleStep ELISA® employs capture antibodies conjugated to an affinity tag that is recognized by the monoclonal antibody used to coat our SimpleStep ELISA® plates. This approach to sandwich ELISA allows the formation of the antibody-analyte sandwich complex in a single step, significantly reducing assay time. Assay Specificity
This kit recognizes both native and recombinant human Lipoprotein A protein in serum, plasmas, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid samples only. Cellular and tissue extract samples have not been tested with this kit.

Lipoprotein A is an atherogenic lipoprotein particle formed by an assembly of LDL particles and apo(a) bound to apoB-100 component of LDL. Apolipoprotein A, the main constituent of Lipoprotein A, has serine proteinase activity and is capable of autoproteolysis. Lipoprotein a also known as Lp(a) or LPA is a lipoprotein particle in the bloodstream characterized by the binding of apolipoprotein(a) to apolipoprotein B-100 on a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) core. It has a molecular weight that varies depending on the size of apolipoprotein(a) typically ranging from 300 to 700 kDa. This protein is primarily synthesized in the liver and its levels are mostly determined by genetic factors. Lp(a) has structural similarity to LDL and plasminogen each playing distinct roles in the body.
Biological function summary
Lp(a) is involved in lipid metabolism and occasionally plays a role in the modulation of fibrinolysis due to its structural resemblance to plasminogen. This resemblance allows it to competitively inhibit plasminogen activation which may influence clot stabilization and breakdown. Lp(a) does not appear to form part of a larger functional complex but can affect processes where plasminogen is active. It plays a dual role in both lipid transport and coagulation processes.
Pathways
The role of Lp(a) is significant in the cardiovascular system particularly in the atherosclerosis pathway.
