REXO2 also referred to as RNase R or Oligoribonuclease is an enzyme with a molecular mass of around 26 kDa. It plays a significant role in the final steps of RNA decay. Mechanically REXO2 functions as an oligoribonuclease catalyzing the degradation of small ribonucleic acids into mononucleotides. This protein is primarily expressed in the mitochondria of the cell where it ensures the proper completion of RNA turnover.
Biological function summary
The enzyme facilitates the maintenance of cellular RNA quality. REXO2 is not a part of any larger complex but its exonuclease activity allows cells to eliminate short RNA fragments which could otherwise accumulate and lead to cellular dysfunction.
