PIGN also known as Phosphatidylinositol Glycan Anchor Biosynthesis Class N is a protein involved in glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor biosynthesis. This protein facilitates the transfer of ethanolamine phosphate to the third mannose in the GPI anchor precursor. The molecular mass of PIGN is approximately 52 kDa. Expression of PIGN is widespread across various tissues including liver pancreas and kidney.
Biological function summary
PIGN plays an important role in anchoring proteins to the cell membrane by forming part of the GPI transamidase complex. This complex which includes other proteins such as PIGK PIGS and GPAA1 is essential for the attachment of GPI anchors to proteins. PIGN ensures correct positioning and functionality of proteins on the cell surface affecting cell-cell communication and signaling.

PIGN participates in the GPI-anchor biosynthesis pathway. This pathway is important for the surface display of many proteins influencing processes like immune response and signal transduction.
