CASK also known as calcium/calmodulin-dependent serine protein kinase is a multifunctional protein with approximately 112 kDa mass. It is involved in intracellular signaling and synaptic function. CASK mainly localizes at the cell membrane but also exists in the cytoplasm and nucleus. This protein widely expresses in the brain and various tissues including the kidney and heart. Its alternative name includes LIN-2 which refers to its homolog in C. elegans.
Biological function summary
CASK acts as a scaffold protein facilitating protein interactions and signal transduction. It forms part of larger complexes such as the MAGUK family supporting the stability and function of cell adhesion molecules. CASK interacts with proteins like neurexins and leukocyte common antigen-related family proteins playing an important role in synaptic formation and maintenance. Its activity involves phosphorylation which impacts neural development mechanisms.
