Beta Amyloid 1-37 also known as Aβ1-37 represents a variant of amyloid beta peptides. It has a molecular weight of approximately 4 kDa. The peptide arises as a cleavage product from the amyloid precursor protein (APP). Expression primarily occurs in the central nervous system specifically in brain tissue. Beta amyloid peptides including Aβ1-37 play a role in forming amyloid fibrils that can aggregate into plaques.
Biological function summary
Aβ1-37 participates in the protein aggregation process related to neuronal function. It interacts as part of the larger amyloid beta protein complex. These complexes play roles in synaptic modulation and neuronal plasticity. Aβ peptides like Aβ1-37 contribute to normal brain function but their misprocessing leads to aggregation. Disruption in their function can impact cell signaling pathways.
Pathways
Amyloid beta fragments have key roles in the amyloidogenic pathway. They specifically contribute to the pathway by participating in APP metabolism. Interaction with proteins such as presenilins influences cleavage activity that generates different Aβ isoforms. The Wnt signaling pathway also connects with amyloid beta peptides where they affect downstream effects on cell cycle and synaptic regulation.
Beta amyloid peptides including Aβ1-37 associate strongly with Alzheimer's disease. Accumulation in the brain appears as one of the hallmark pathologies of this neurodegenerative disorder. The peptides also show a relation to cerebral amyloid angiopathy where amyloid deposits within vascular structures. Aβ1-37 and its related fragments interact not only with APP but also with tau protein contributing to further disease progression.
