SCD5 also known as Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase 5 is an enzyme involved in lipid metabolism. It catalyzes the introduction of a double bond into saturated fatty acyl-CoA substrates primarily converting stearic acid into oleic acid. SCD5 has a mass of approximately 42 kDa and is expressed mainly in human tissues such as the brain liver and adipose tissue. Its expression level can vary depending on the tissue type and physiological conditions.
Biological function summary
The conversion of saturated fatty acids to monounsaturated fatty acids by SCD5 plays a significant role in maintaining lipid homeostasis. SCD5 does not form part of a larger protein complex refraining from complex interactions unlike some other SCD family members. The enzyme regulates the fluidity of cell membranes and is involved in synthesizing triglycerides and phospholipids affecting cellular energy storage and membrane composition.
Pathways
SCD5 is an important component in the lipid biosynthetic pathway and fatty acid metabolism. It functions alongside other enzymes in fatty acid desaturation pathways working closely with substrates produced by Acetyl-CoA Carboxylase (ACC) and Fatty Acid Synthase (FAS). These enzymes contribute to the synthesis and modification of lipids integrating into broader lipid signaling and metabolic pathways. SCD5's activity influences signaling pathways related to metabolism and energy balance within cells.
SCD5 has been linked to metabolic conditions such as obesity and diabetes. Changes in SCD5 expression or activity can affect lipid profile and insulin sensitivity pointing to its involvement in these metabolic diseases. Additionally dysregulation of SCD5 has connections with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) where its altered function affects lipid accumulation in the liver. The enzyme's role in these disorders suggests possible interactions with proteins like Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptors (PPARs) which regulate genes involved in lipid and glucose metabolism.
