YIF1A also known as Yip1 Family Member 1 or Yin Yang 1-Interacting Factor 1 functions mechanically as a membrane protein involved in trafficking between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi apparatus. It has a molecular mass of approximately 35 kDa. This protein localizes predominantly to intracellular membranous structures most notably within the ER and the Golgi. Its expression occurs in various tissues including brain liver and kidney where it plays specialized roles in protein transport and cellular homeostasis.
Biological function summary
This protein interacts with various components of intracellular transport machinery. YIF1A is part of a larger YIP1 complex that supports vesicle formation and trafficking essential for maintaining proper cellular function. Through its interaction with this complex YIF1A contributes to the regulation of protein sorting and distribution which is necessary for functional membrane dynamics and signal transduction.
Pathways
YIF1A participates in intracellular transport and vesicle-mediated processes. It associates with the vesicular trafficking pathway where it regulates the movement and sorting of proteins between the ER and Golgi. YIF1A works in conjunction with proteins like YIPF5 in these pathways which coordinate the accurate delivery and modification of proteins necessary for normal cellular operations.
YIF1A's dysregulation links to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease. Misfunction in YIF1A can lead to improper protein trafficking contributing to cellular stress and neuron degeneration. Additionally YIF1A connects to the sigma-1 receptor a protein implicated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) indicating its relevance in neurological health. Understanding these associations can offer insights into potential therapeutic targets for these ailments.
