SLC15A3 also known as Peptide/Histidine Transporter 2 (PHT2) is a transporter protein involved in dipeptide and oligopeptide transport across cellular membranes. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 95 kDa. SLC15A3 is mainly expressed in a variety of tissues including the kidney lung and immune system cells. It plays an important role in maintaining amino acid balance within cells by facilitating the entry of peptides.
Biological function summary
SLC15A3 functions to regulate the immune system by modulating peptide availability within immune cells. This transporter is a part of the larger solute carrier (SLC) family which includes several transporters involved in nutrient absorption and cellular metabolism. SLC15A3 does not form part of a known complex but interacts with other proteins within the immune function pathways thereby reinforcing its role in cellular defense mechanisms.
Pathways
SLC15A3 has important roles in the immune response and antimicrobial peptide pathways. It is involved in pathways such as the NF-kB signaling aiding in immune activation and response. SLC15A3 works alongside proteins like TLRs (Toll-like receptors) and MyD88 providing pathways with vital peptides required for immune signal transduction and response.
SLC15A3 has relations to inflammatory diseases and certain types of cancers. Disruptions in SLC15A3 expression or function can contribute to inappropriate immune responses leading to chronic inflammation. Additionally altered activity levels can influence tumor growth due to changes in peptide transport and amino acid availability which affects proteins like mTOR involved in regulating cell growth and proliferation. Understanding SLC15A3's role offers potential for therapeutic targets in these conditions.
