Product details:
Human Pro-Collagen I C-Terminal Propeptide ELISA Kit (PICP) ab272198 is a rapid single-wash 90-min Sandwich ELISA to measure Human Pro-Collagen I C-Terminal Propeptide (PICP)in cell culture media, citrate plasma, EDTA plasma, heparin plasma, serum. This SimpleStep sensitivity is 8.15 pg/mL.
How the assay works
Human Pro-Collagen I C-Terminal Propeptide (PICP)SimpleStep ELISA
employs capture antibodies conjugated to an affinity tag that is recognized by the monoclonal antibody used to coat our SimpleStep ELISA
plates. This approach to sandwich ELISA allows the formation of the antibody-analyte sandwich complex in a single step, significantly reducing assay time. See the SimpleStep ELISA
protocol summary in the image section for further details.
Assay Specificity
Our SimpleStep ELISA
kits use recombinant monoclonal antibodies rigorously validated to ensure the highest level of consistency and reproducibility, improved sensitivity and specificity and ease of scalability and security of supply.
Please refer to our protocol booklet for more details.

Pro-Collagen I C-Terminal Propeptide (PICP), encoded by the
COL1A1
gene, is the fibrillar collagen that serves as a major component of type I collagen found in cartilage and most connective tissues. Studies have shown that mutations in the mutations in the Pro-Collagen I C-Terminal Propeptide are associated with osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta diseases, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. The standard protein in this product is the C‑terminal Propeptide region of Collagen alpha-1(I).

PICP also known as procollagen type 1 C-peptide or collagen C-peptide is a byproduct released during the synthesis of type I collagen. Type I collagen is the most abundant collagen type in the human body providing structure to skin bone tendons and other connective tissues. PICP has a molecular mass of approximately 35-38 kDa. It is expressed in tissues where type I collagen is synthesized including bone and skin fibroblasts.
Biological function summary
PICP serves as a marker for collagen biosynthesis closely reflecting the rate of collagen type I production. PICP does not form part of a larger complex but exists as a separate entity once cleaved from procollagen. Its presence in the bloodstream allows researchers to monitor collagen turnover which is vital in understanding tissue formation and remodeling processes.
Pathways
PICP connects with collagen synthesis and deposition pathways particularly relevant in bone formation and skin repair. It interacts indirectly with proteins like collagenase during collagen degradation and remodeling. Increased PICP levels indicate heightened collagen synthesis correlating with anabolic processes especially in bone metabolism pathways.
PICP levels are significant in bone-related conditions like osteoporosis where decreased collagen synthesis is often observed. It also correlates with fibrotic conditions including liver fibrosis where elevated collagen production marks disease progression. In these contexts PICP relates to other proteins such as procollagen type III N-peptide (PIIINP) which also serve as markers of pathological collagen deposition.
