The SARS-CoV-2 nsp5 also known as 3C-like protease or Mpro plays an important mechanical role in the life cycle of the virus. It is a cysteine protease with a mass around 33.8 kDa responsible for processing the viral polyprotein into functional units essential for viral replication. Nsp5 carries out cleavage at specific sites on the polyprotein enabling the viral replication machinery.
