Product details:
Human CETP ELISA Kit (ab285287, K4170) is designed for the quantitative measurement of human CETP in human serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, culture supernatants and other biological fluids. The density of color is proportional to the amount of human CETP captured from the samples.
This product is manufactured by BioVision, an Abcam company and was previously called K4170 CETP (Human) ELISA Kit. K4170-100 is the same size as the 96 test size of ab285287.

CETP also known as Cholesteryl Ester Transfer Protein is a plasma glycoprotein with a molecular mass of approximately 74 kDa. It is primarily expressed in the liver and circulates in the bloodstream. CETP mediates the transfer of cholesteryl esters and triglycerides between high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) influencing lipid balance in human plasma. This protein is essential for regulating the distribution and composition of HDL and LDL particles impacting lipid homeostasis.
Biological function summary
CETP plays a role in lipid metabolism by facilitating the redistribution of lipids among various lipoprotein particles. CETP does not function as part of a larger molecular complex but actively interacts with lipoproteins in a reversible manner. Its activity affects the levels of HDL cholesterol often referred to as "good cholesterol" and contributes to maintaining lipid levels within physiological limits. By modulating the lipid exchanges CETP influences atherosclerosis progression and cardiovascular health.
Pathways
CETP interacts significantly with lipoprotein metabolism and reverse cholesterol transport pathways. It works alongside key proteins such as apolipoprotein A-I and apolipoprotein B which are present in HDL and LDL particles respectively. CETP activity in these pathways modulates the cholesterol efflux capability of HDL affecting lipid clearance from tissues back to the liver. These interactions ensure the maintenance of cholesterol equilibrium and are vital in lipid recycling processes.
CETP is closely linked to cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis. Elevated CETP activity correlates with low HDL cholesterol levels and higher risk of coronary artery disease. CETP inhibitors have been researched for their potential to increase HDL levels and reduce cardiovascular risk. Furthermore CETP activity influences the pathology of metabolic syndrome where lipid imbalances exacerbate the condition. Proteins related to CETP in these contexts include HDL and LDL which are altered in their distributions by CETP's activity impacting disease progression and management.
