The protein FAM134B also known as JK-1 is an autophagy regulator with a molecular mass of approximately 50 kDa. FAM134B plays a critical role in the degradation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membranes. This protein expresses robustly in the neural tissues gastrointestinal tract and reproductive organs. FAM134B functions by binding to membranes and facilitating the removal of damaged ER components which maintains cellular homeostasis.

FAM134B serves as an important player in maintaining cell health by its involvement in ER-phagy a selective autophagy process. It forms part of the ER-phagy complex and works alongside LC3 proteins to ensure efficient turnover of the ER membrane.
