Regulator of G-protein Signaling 2 (RGS2) also known as G0S8 is a protein that modulates the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling pathway by accelerating the GTPase activity of the G alpha subunits. This process shortens the signal duration of active G-proteins effectively turning off the signal. RGS2 has a molecular mass of approximately 24-26 kDa. It is expressed in various tissues with high levels found in the brain heart and kidney.
Biological function summary
RGS2 plays an important role in controlling cardiovascular functions by regulating blood pressure and cardiac contractility. It interacts with other proteins within the GPCR pathway to modulate signal transduction serving as an important regulatory component rather than a standalone molecule. RGS2 involvement in signal transduction highlights its importance in multiple cellular processes including cell growth and response to external stimuli.
Pathways
RGS2 significantly influences the GPCR signaling and the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) critical for cardiovascular regulation and fluid balance. In the GPCR signaling pathway RGS2 modulates the activity of G-proteins like Gq therefore influencing downstream effectors such as phospholipase C and calcium mobilization. Additionally through the RAS pathway it interacts with angiotensin II receptors demonstrating its role in hypertension and vascular tone regulation.
Improper function or expression of RGS2 relates to hypertension due to its regulatory effects on blood pressure and anxiety disorders as it is involved in neurological pathways. The protein's dysregulation can affect angiotensin receptors contributing to increased blood pressure. In anxiety alterations in calcium signaling and neurotransmitter release link RGS2 with G-proteins closely tied to mood regulation. Understanding RGS2 interactions offers potential for targeted therapies in these conditions.
