SMARCAD1 also known as SWI/SNF-related matrix-associated actin-dependent regulator of chromatin subfamily A member 1 acts as a chromatin remodeler. It interacts with DNA to assist in maintaining chromatin in a state that allows for proper transcription regulation. Its molecular mass is approximately 192 kDa. SMARCAD1 is widely expressed in multiple tissues with higher levels being reported in neural tissues.
Biological function summary
SMARCAD1 plays a significant role in DNA repair and replication. It is part of the INO80 chromatin remodeling complex that helps facilitate these processes. SMARCAD1 influences the epigenetic state of cells and participates in maintaining genomic stability. It also helps in regulating the expression of various genes involved in differentiation and development.
Pathways
SMARCAD1 participates in important processes like DNA repair and chromatin organization. It implicates itself in the homologous recombination (HR) and non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) pathways which are vital for DNA repair mechanisms. Related proteins in these pathways include RAD51 essential for strand invasion during HR and KU70/80 which are essential components of NHEJ.
SMARCAD1 has links to cancer and immunodeficiency. Its role in maintaining genomic integrity makes its malfunction a contributor to tumorigenesis. Additionally alterations in SMARCAD1 expression may impact the immune system function through interactions with other proteins such as ATM which is important for DNA damage response. Recognizing these connections helps in understanding the mechanisms of these diseases and might contribute to the development of therapeutic interventions.
