The G protein-coupled receptor GPR20 also known as GPR20 is a member of the GPCR family characterized by its seven-transmembrane domains. This receptor has a mass of approximately 37 kDa. GPR20 is an orphan receptor meaning its endogenous ligand is not well-defined. The receptor expresses most highly in the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system although expression in other tissues can also occur. As an orphan GPCR GPR20 can influence intracellular signaling pathways through activation of G proteins.
Biological function summary
GPR20 plays a role in intracellular signaling pathways involving cyclic AMP (cAMP) and phosphatidylinositol. Although not part of a complex GPR20 can interact with various G proteins to transmit signals from the outside to the inside of the cell. This influences various cellular responses such as cell proliferation differentiation and survival. The exact biological functions of GPR20 are still under investigation but can influence physiological processes in the tissues where it is expressed.
Pathways
GPR20 integrates into signaling pathways related to cAMP production and phosphatidylinositol metabolism. GPR20 influences the cAMP signaling pathway potentially impacting processes like neurotransmission. Through this pathway GPR20 can interact with other proteins like adenylate cyclases and various G protein subunits sharing pathways with other GPCRs but exhibiting specific roles based on its tissue distribution and receptor specificity.
Research indicates that GPR20 may have a connection to cancer especially gastrointestinal cancer. The high expression of GPR20 in the gastrointestinal tract makes it a potential target for understanding cancer cell proliferation in this region. Additionally GPR20 might relate to neurological disorders because of its presence in the central nervous system. Its signaling pathways intersect with other proteins like beta-arrestins which play roles in regulating receptor desensitization potentially influencing cancer progression or neurological disease pathology.
