GPCR GPR87 also known as G protein-coupled receptor 87 is a transmembrane receptor involved in various signaling processes. It has a molecular weight of approximately 42 kDa. GPR87 is expressed in various tissues with higher levels in certain cancers such as lung and bladder cancers. This receptor belongs to the large GPCR family which functions in transmitting signals from outside the cell to the inside leading to various cellular responses.
Biological function summary
In mediating cellular communication GPR87 plays a role in autocrine signaling mechanisms. It is not typically part of a larger complex but works closely with ligands and other signaling molecules to exert its effects. Studies indicate that GPR87 activation could promote cell proliferation and survival particularly in cancerous tissues suggesting a role in oncogenic pathways and cellular homeostasis.
Pathways
Multiple studies indicate that GPR87 participates in the p53 and Wnt signaling pathways. It might modulate the expression of target proteins such as p53 which is an important player in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis. GPR87 interacts with other proteins within these pathways potentially contributing to the regulatory loops that control cell fate and proliferation.
Researchers link GPR87 with lung and bladder cancer due to its overexpression in these tissues. It correlates with tumor aggression and poor prognosis indicating its role in cancer progression. The p53 protein a well-known tumor suppressor interacts with GPR87 adding complexity to the regulatory networks involved in these cancers. Understanding GPR87's contributions to these diseases may offer insights for developing targeted therapies.
