CPSF1 also known as Cleavage and Polyadenylation Specificity Factor 1 plays an important role in pre-mRNA processing. It has a molecular weight of approximately 160 kDa and is present ubiquitously in various tissues indicating its essential role in cellular function. This protein acts at the 3' end of pre-mRNA facilitating cleavage and polyadenylation essential processes for mRNA maturation and stability. CPSF1 functions as a part of the larger cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor complex interacting with other proteins to ensure efficient RNA processing.
Biological function summary
CPSF1 is integral to the formation of mature mRNA which is critical for effective gene expression. It contributes to the cleavage and polyadenylation complex that binds to specific RNA sequences to promote proper 3' end formation of mRNA. This complex in which CPSF1 partners with other proteins like CPSF4 and CPSF6 helps stabilize the polyadenylation signal. Without this activity cells struggle with improper mRNA maturation leading to defects in gene expression.
Pathways
CPSF1 plays a significant role in the mRNA processing pathway where it ensures the correct formation of mRNA tails. This function connects it to gene expression regulatory mechanisms such as the splicing pathway. Through its interaction with proteins like CPSF3 CPSF1 maintains the fidelity of mRNA processing which is pivotal for cellular responses and adaptation to various conditions.
CPSF1 has a strong connection to some forms of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Mutations or dysregulation in CPSF1 expression have been observed in specific cancer types where they contribute to aberrant gene expression patterns. Additionally disruptions in CPSF1 and its interaction with other proteins like CSTF64 in the neurodegenerative context highlight its broader implications in disease pathogenesis linking altered pre-mRNA processing with disease conditions.
